Direct Bus

montezuma bus

Currently only $15.50, the public bus is a very comfortable, and the most affordable way to get to Montezuma. The bus is very modern and comfortable, easily floating over the bumpy roads, so if you’ve got a bad back or are easily tired out by gravel roads then this is a great way to get here.

Bus Station Terminal: Catch it at “Nueva Megaterminal, Avenida 7, Calle 10, contiguo al Cine Líbano”

You catch it in downtown San Jose at 6:00 am in the morning or 2:00pm in the afternoon. Be very careful with your luggage there and don’t get distracted because thieves have been known to pull scams whereby while you’re paying attention to something else, they walk off with a suitcase.

If you’re at the international airport, you can wait at the Puente de Villa Bonita (Villa Bonita Bridge) and it will stop there 20 minutes or so after the departure time in San Jose, so you don’t need to go to downtown SJ to catch it.

The bus will head to Puntarenas, and then onto the ferry. There, you’ll have to get off the bus and walk onto the ferry. You can leave your luggage inside, since the bus will drive onto the ferry (they always leave enough space for it.) The ferry goes from Puntarenas to Paquera, and will then make a few stops possibly to let people off on the way to Cobano. From there it’s a short drive to Montezuma (10-15 minutes more).

Usually it takes around 5 1/2 hours to reach its destination.

Getting from Liberia Airport to Montezuma

There’s no direct bus, but what you can do is take a bus from Liberia to Puntarenas, where there’s a good-sized bus station (Puntarenas is one of the largest cities in Costa Rica), and from there catch a taxi, a local bus, hitch-hike, or walk to the Ferry (2.3 km) You can take the ferry across and catch a bus on the other side to take you to Cobano or Montezuma, depending on the ferry you’re on and how full the buses are.
