Thinking about getting your scuba diving certification? If you’re 14 or older, you can get certified here in Montezuma through the Tortuga Dive Club. Montezuma is an excellent spot to do this because the water is warm and comfortable, and the teachers and program here are great.
The course will be a CMAS certification. CMAS is the scuba diving group supported by Jacques Cousteau, and was founded in 1958. While PADI is the most popular certification program, the two organizations have a formal agreement to respect the other’s graduates. So, once you get your CMAS certification, you can dive with virtually any dive tour operator in the world. I personally have the PADI certificate, but after watching my girlfriend take the CMAS course, I felt that CMAS was a better course, with more safety preparation, so I highly recommend it.
The course classification is “One Star – Open Water Diver” in which you will be certified for the rest of your life once you pass the course. You will be certified to dive up to 60 feet in depth, which is deep enough to see most sea life, which tends to stay near the surface where there’s more light.
The course includes:
5 theory classes
5 pool classes
5 ocean classes
CD Rom – Multimedia manual in most languages
Transportation & Equipment
Snacks, food, fruit, oysters, drinks during the tours/classes on the boat
Immediate delivery of your certification card
More advance dive courses are offered as well, such as to be certified for deep diving, or to become a dive instructor. The CMAS classifications for this are:
Open Water Advanced (2 stars)
Dive Master (3 stars)
Tortuga Dive Club – This is the group that does the certification, which you can do while staying in Montezuma or nearby towns such as Santa Teresa.
Anamaya Resort – Anamaya offers luxury “Scuba and Yoga” retreats that include the certification course by the Tortuga Dive Club. The retreats at Anamaya also can include yoga, surfing, healthy cooking classes, etc, and Anamaya has a spa also.
My new favorite restaurant, Clandestina is not to be missed by food lovers staying anywhere near to Montezuma. Established in March 2015, Clandestina is the new kid on the block. The Oregon/Tico collaboration is a winner among locals and travelers alike, with artisan craft beers, made onsite by Butterfly Brewing Co. and delicious, exciting […]
